Ingredients
- 6 2/3C flour (all purpose)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2-3 tbsp ground anise
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt

Directions
Combine the above ingredients, set aside.
1C shortening or butter
1C sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
Cream above ingredients together.
1/2C white corn syrup
1/2C molasses
1/3C water
1 tsp baking soda
Combine above ingredients, then add to creamed mixture. Mix in sifted ingredients.
Chill in refrigerator at least 24 hours.
Cut into large pieces and roll into thin logs (about 1 inch) on lightly floured board. Cut into 1" pieces and roll into balls. Ed. note: I totally skip the rolling out part, it's fine. Just make 1" balls straight out of the bowl.
Bake at 350 degrees F 10-12 minutes. They will -barely- brown on the bottom.
Frost with glaze if desired - confectioners sugar mixed with milk to a spreading consistency. Make sure cookied are completely cooled before you try glazing, or it'll turn clear and way too thin.
